Thanks, Jamie. I’d wondered if perhaps I’d gone too far with it, so it’s nice to see I’m not the only one being driven insane by such things!

Not a Bayer Leverkusen fan, but this is a hilarious and well-written blog. I love the match day beard.

That match day beard is just adorable. I love it. Why oh why does Kießling never get a damn call up? I used to have a crush on Jogi but now I just want to kick him. Really hard.
Scott I love your blog! I just wish you would write about Leverkusen more often. Maybe I’m crazy, but it seems like a bunch of other teams on the offside get more frequent updates…or i just love leverkusen.

You guys are making me blush! Thank you for the kind words.
Wendy, I’ve thought about whether or not I should update more frequently, and certainly would if something big happened, but for the daily news of who said what and who’s being admired, I’ve been of the opinion anyone interested has probably already read it so really I’d just be recapping or linking to old news. Considering the scant coverage we receive as compared to other clubs in the Bundesliga, though, you may well be right in your request!Löw is definitely earning the criticisms of late and the press and public won’t let him off easy if he comes back from Russia without 3 points. As much as he deserves a good flogging, I’m hoping it doesn’t come as the result of a botched match on Saturday. As an aside, and further example of how Stefan isn’t getting the attention he deserves, I read one footy writer, today, suggesting Jogi’s big mistake was not calling up Thomas Müller for the Russia match. Now THAT is damn insult!

Great write-up of a day of WC qualifiers. I really enjoyed reading it.
It felt a bit “random” how Rene Adler ended up being the #1 again to be honest, but he certainly proved to be up to the task. Though, I personally also do have that confidence in Enke or Neuer. But we’re coming to a point, where it’s time to finalize the team, so I can live with Adler as #1 for SA.

Heeeh this was funnay. I don’t think Adler getting picked was random at all, he was definitely the logical second choice (but if I were Jogi, I would have made him #1 a long time ago). Thanks for doing the little feature on him today
I love love LOVE Adler, and people just don’t give him enough credit for the most part. He’s such a smart player with crazy-quick reflexes. It sucks that poor Enke had to be near death for Rene to play in these qualifiers. Will Jogi go back to having Enke as his first choice? It’s unfortunate that he was ill, but Rene DID help get them through some important matches, so wouldn’t it be logical to keep him in goal? Oh wait…he thinks Cacau and Gomez are better choices than Kießling…logic doesn’t have a whole lot to do with it.
But that Özil to Klose goal was amazingly delcious, ja? Russia would have scored a bunch of great goals too if it hadn’t been for Rene. They’ve got an incredible team and I’d like to see them kicking ass in South Africa as well.
Do you have any of the post-match interviews, or do you know where to watch them?

Wendy, here are links to some of the post-match interviews (well, at the end):

The second link shows Rene’s saves as well. He was excellent yesterday!

Thanks for those, Jamie. I’ve shied away from posting youtube links in the posts because they always seem to have been replaced by a copyright notice when I next come check the page. The post-match interview stuff should stay up longer.
Jogi hasn’t committed to Adler as permanent #1, although he crowed about Adler’s performance and commented on how strong a role he played in making him look could (I paraphrase, of course.) I definitely think he has earned the role by now. His route to the #1 jersey wasn’t random, per se, but wasn’t a direct show of faith, either. Had Enke not fallen ill, it’s very likely we’d have seen him wearing that number for the past few matches. If he’d performed well, even without keeping a clean sheet, it’s likely Löw wouldn’t be considering altering the roster. Adler was fortunate through Enke’s misfortune, just as he was when he found himself replacing Butt for Leverkusen on the fateful day 2-and-a-half years back. That luck, though, only gave him the opportunity. His abilities are what have kept him in place with Leverkusen and will, hopefully, do the same with the NT. Now I just wish the dreary notion of his moving to Manchester United didn’t keep springing up.

Quick update for you, Wendy. Löw says that the staff will be looking at the permanent picture in the coming weeks and will most likely offer a long-term answer by November’s end. Ballack was quoted as saying “With a performance such as the one put in (by Adler,) you confirm your place on the team.” Source: http://bit.ly/Az6sg

My heart stopped when Hyppia made that header…I was so sure that it was going to be a goal
I’m really disappointed, as I thought this game was going to be one of the most intense of the season, but nooo everyone had to play all defensively and whatnot. But I guess we can’t complain too much…Leverkusen’s still top of the table and undefeated.
So what in the world is all this mess about Arsene thinking about stealing Stefan Kießling from Bayer? That’s giving me shooting chest pains.

The game was a disappointment. More games like that and we may not stay unbeaten much longer… Is it just me or do they lack enthusiasm when Rolfes is off the pitch?
At least Hamburg and Schalke tied and we are still top of the heap!

Great post as always. When watching this match I felt it inevitable after the Friedrich goal that Bayer would snatch another to take it 2-1. Dortmund played pretty well, but I think they would’ve been hammered in midfield had Rolfes and Augusto been on the pitch.
So i take you are from Vegas. Ditto on that. The chatter you can overhear while in a casino can be great comedy but also make you hate humanity. I also despise when I’m exhausted traveling back from business on fridays and the plane is full of drunken, frenzied vegas travelers. At least they buy me free drinks on occasion.

I really hope our boys haven’t run out of steam just yet. They look good at the top. I’m worried about the Schalke match this weekend.

ay dios mio Kießling’s getting called up for the november testspiele!! And you updated in the middle of the week. Maybe this is a sign of good things to come…good things such as Kieß telling juve to kiss it. And like man united keeping their dirty, debt-ridden paws far, far away from deutsche boys with confrontational cheekbones and worried eyeballs.

Wendy and Rene sitting in a tree….
I’m afraid the plot has thickened: http://bit.ly/1cQfK9
Rumour is one thing, Managers skirting questions is another. As much as I’d like to believe Adler is as devoted to Leverkusen as, say, Neuer is to Schalke, he has stated his love of Man U too often. But I don’t think the draw is money.Any footballer must want to play Europe at the highest level, and so far the closest Rene has gotten with SVB was the UEFA Cup dalliance. United offer consistent Champs League play, which has huge value to a player’s development.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player so visibly miserable as Adler looked last season when it became clear Europe wasn’t going to happen for the Werkself. If he could have walked away in the summer, I’m sure he would have. And even though we’ll without a doubt be finishing this season with an invite to the inter-league festivities, there’s still that whole boyhood dream thing to get over.
For now, cross your fingers if you have them.

Ugh, this morning it was like a wooden stake being driven towards my heart only to get lodged into my ribcage when schalke equalized in the last couple minutes.
Sami didn’t look like he was feeling so great when he came off, poor thing, and then BAM everyone gets flustered. Pfft. Kroos is developing quite nicely though. I hope he doesn’t go all diva-bitch on everyone and return to Bayern.
I have a new theory concerning Kießling’s lack of recent call-ups. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTYrisKGmds You’ve probably seen this a million times, but I’m preeedy sure that’s Kießling sitting on the end there right in front of Flick…look at his face at 17 seconds when Jogi sniffs his armpit. It looks like he leaned over to gossip about it. Maybe Jogi didn’t like that
I’ve decided that it is cruel, unreasonable, and possesive of me to want to chain Rene to the BayArena goalposts for the remainder of eternity. If he goes to Man u, it’ll be great for them, and great for him and he’ll get so much better and get called up for every international match etc etc and he’ll never have to worry about neuer/enke/wiese types trying to steal his job.
And it’s still technically just gossip at this point, ja? Even though leverkusen aren’t denying anything…

Everything is just rumour until it happens. Latest word is that Man U have put in a bid for Neuer. Magath says Neuer’s not for sale. Management, however, has recently said that everything at Schalke that isn’t nailed down is for sale. Ironic that Magath brazenly stated his decision to leave Wolfsburg was wholly cash based, and is now having to deal with the absence of it. The offer for Neuer was reportedly a few million Euro short. ( http://www.fussballtransfers.com/schalke-04-manu-bietet-13-5-mio_article2578.html )
As for young Toni , he doesn’t strike me as the diva type. But FCB don’t like anyone having a good time but themselves and have made it clear to Leverkusen that they plan to take Kroos back come summer, despite our wanting to work out an extension to that original arrangement. With Kroos contracted to Bayern through 2012, the decision is out of his hands.

“As for young Toni , he doesn’t strike me as the diva type.”
I’ve read an article about him and his slowing progress and it suggested that all the hype had indeed gone to his head and that he acted accordingly. But his benchtime at Bayern and Mesut Özil’s and others meteoric rise will probably help keep him grounded and motivate him to work hard to catch up.
