Werkself loses to Hamburg
By: Ulf | February 23rd, 2009
Düsseldorf as the temporary home has not worked so well for Leverkusen yet as they lost 2-1 to Hamburg Sunday afternoon. While Leverkusen was able to control the general run of play early, Hamburg took the lead after eighteen minutes when José Guerrero sent the ball back to Marcell Jansen in the penalty area before drilling his shot past René Adler and into the net. However ten minutes later German international Patrick Helmes scored his sixteen goal of the year as he redirected Manuel Friedrich’s cross from ten metres out into the net and the large group was hopeful of a victory. However the attacking push of Leverkusen was under-wraps for much of the match and what was came typically through the tireless work of Renato Augusto. That withstanding Hamburg disappointed the home supporters with twenty-three minutes remaining as Marcell Jansen scored his second of the day when he volleyed José Guerrero’s provision in from the six yard box to give them the 2-1 victory.
Beyond the dropped points the match was also costly as both Gonzalo Castro and Henrique received what is their fifth yellow card of the season and will now Saturday’s tricky match against Hannover.
