Werkself dominates 1899 AGAIN

By: Ulf | February 13th, 2009

Just as the third week of the season when Werkself easily beat Hoffenheim 5-2, once again Bruno Labbadia’s side defeated them 4-1 Friday evening. Like the Bundesliga 2 side they were last year, Hoffenheim were run over by the clearly superiour Leverkusen.

In front of a packed Rhein-Neckar Arena, the home side was run off the pitch by Leverkusen. Quickly 30,000-plus home supporters knew how the match would unfold as only three minutes in Renato Augusto found Patrick Helmes just inside the box and he tore into the ball making it 1-0. That wasn’t enough though and only nine minutes later sorrow set-in for the home side as Simon Rolfes redirected Tranquillo Barnetta’s free-kick in. At the half hour mark the spot was pointed after René Adler brought down Demba Ba in the area after he had raced in on a through ball. Bosnian international Sejad Salihović converted but the one goal margin didn’t last long as Werkself quickly went back on the attack. Turning the screw before the break, Patrick Helmes drilled a free kick from the edge of the area into the net to bring the match to a 3-1 margin. After the break Hoffenheim brought in Isaac Vorsah and Edu Obasi, moving into a 4-3-3 trying to get back into the match. However those efforts did not last long as two minutes in Tranquillo Barnetta’s corner from the left was headed-in by Gonzalo Castro, giving Leverkusen a 4-1 lead. For the rest of the match Leverkusen controlled the run of play and while they could have added to slaughter, the match ended 4-1.
