talk of Football in Germany must include ‘Gladbach

By: Ulf | December 4th, 2008

To speak of Football in Germany, you must first understand the importance clubs in the regions history, the ups, the downs and even the re-birth of some. This is firmly on my mind this evening as I look ahead to Werkself’s visit of Borussia Mönchengladbach. Sadly, little is said of ‘Gladbach in the english-speaking press of this great club, yet for those of us who grew up with the game, the German game in our blood, it is a integral part. Whether it is the idea each generation playing with the spirit of Berti Vogts or the undying loyalty of their fans, ‘Gladbach must be respected at every turn and cannot be counted out. And so, while some will look at Saturday’s match of two clubs at opposite ends of the table, I see it as date on the calender full of the rich history of the game.

‘Gladbach’s fortunes have not gone so well this year as they rest second to last with the clear weakness being defending. After a bad start the perfect man to handle a relegation battle, Hans Meyer, was summoned to take over the reigns. While results have come at a premium in the tight Bundesliga race, visitors to Borussia-Park know they are dealing with a club that if it regains its confidence can improve its play significantly. The lineup will likely change considerably during the transfer window particularly in its back-line but up-front the youth of Marko Marin and two former SC Heerenveen players Michael Bradley and Rob Friend> show promise.

Thanks for the write-up -> you’re right, it’s hard to get information on German football and what’s available now naturally focuses on the well-performing teams of recent times. i.e. Bayern Munich (well, they’ve always been around) and others like Werder. The newer/younger fans of the Bundesliga lack knowledge on great German teams of the past.

Seen that I’m a new(ish) fan to the Bundesliga myself, it’d be great if you could do a write-up of the 1. FC Koln vs Bayer rivalry when we face them again next year.

    Cheers and thank you. :)

Hikaru, thank you for the encouragement. I am glad I am on the right track with that because I wasn’t sure. I have been upset how some in English-media like to portray the Bundesliga fans so hopefully this will be a good start.

I will be pleased to continued, in particular as Werkself visits Köln in April.

Please let me know if I can answer any of your questions. One day you must come to a match, then you will truly understand German Football.
