René Adler out for first match
By: Ines | August 14th, 2008Cheers everyone,
just when things started to settle down …
René Adler will miss the first match of the season and the international match against Belgium next Wednesday due to a shoulder injury. It’s not yet determined how long he’ll be out.
Ah well. Nothing that can be done about that. In Benne Fernandez we trust. Benne already had to keep the goal for Adler three times last season. All three matches were won, and he manged to keep a clean sheet in two of them. That’s what I call a good omen.
I’m very curious, though, if and whom Jogi Loew is going to call up as a sub.
Take care.

Interesting, indeed. This will tip Jogi Loew’s hand. Enke is the back up, but who else will be called? Will Hildebrand get back in the line-up? Rensing? Wiese? It’s a crying shame that Neuer is injured. Though Rensing has proven himself, without him having actually played in the league as Bayern’s number one, I can’t see him getting the call-up.

The kicker website reported that Tim Wiese is the replacement for Adler.

Parker, you referring to Wiese being the replacement?

Yse. Why not give Hildebrand a chance?
I do not mean Wiese is a bad choice. Just….

Hildebrand has no match practice as the Spanish league starts at the end of August and I think Löw still needs to talk with him about everything before calling him up again.
Giving Wiese a chance ahead of e.g. Hamburg’s Frank Rost is a bad choice though. Rost is the better more consistent and less error prone keeper.

Maybe now Wiese will shut up about it, though. I’m half-hoping he’ll play and make an error so we don’t have to hear about him again.

*giggles* Oh my. The Tim Wiese incident. Just for the record: I like him. But still. Not calling Hildebrand to the team is the final slap to his face, seriously. If I were him, I’d tell Loew that I wouldn’t be playing for Germany anymore as long as he’s coaching the team.

What would that really accomplish, though? (Hildebrand saying he won’t play, that is.) I mean, he’s already not being called up, and I’m not convinced Germany need him at this point, so…

I’ve got to agree with Jan. Rost’s steady performance was a bit lost in the shuffle due to all the emerging young goalkeepers last season. I also think a young goalkeeping group should include someone who is more of an “elder statesman” if you will, and I think Rost fits that bill.

I’d like to disagree with you, Luke. Rost is a brilliant goalkeeper, that’s for sure. But I definitely think that it’s time to build up the new generation without the help of an elder goal keeper. Adler managed it without that help in Bayer 04. The youngsters will surely managed without Rost/Lehmann/Weidenfeller/whoelsever in the international team. ^^

LOL! I had the same thought. Hee!

I’m on the fence, here. I do think we need to build up the next generation of keepers. But I think Germany does better when they have one solid rock in the back to count on, and a part of me places more trust in an “elder statesmen” type. But I can also see Adler or Neuer staking early places in the national sides, a la Iker Casillas. Really, this year is a useful year for Loew to try out different options before settling on an early first choice for the World Cup in 2010. I hope he takes advantage of the opportunity.
