Poll: Who will end Leverkusen’s unbeaten streak?
By: Scott | January 3rd, 2010And a Happy New Year to you, Leverkusen fans!
Although we’re officially back in training, the Werkself news front has remained relatively quiet. Aside from the pre-Christmas news concerning Theofanis Gekas and Richard Sukuta-Pasu going out on loan to Hertha and St. Pauli, respectively, and Pierre de Wit leaving the Bayer 04 reserves to go to 2. Bundesliga table-toppers, Kaisterslautern, there has been no movement on the transfer front.
Manuel Freidrich, as you must already know, has extended his contract through the 2013 season. Captain Simon Rolfes is back in training and expected to be fit for our January 16 return to play against Mainz, as is Renato Augusto. There was talk of Jupp Heynckes considering taking Breno on loan from FCB, but that clearly won’t be happening as the Brazilian has since been sent to Nürnberg where he won’t get in the way of Bayern’s push for another title. Also briefly discussed in the German press was a possible Leverkusen move for Croation mid-fielder Milin Badelj to make up for the loss of Toni Kroos come Summer, but Rudi Völler scuttled that rumour, saying he’s still not entirely convinced Kroos will be going anywhere. And so, with very little to say on my part, I figured I’d turn things over to you with a poll question that will hopefully do more than force me to start 2010 with the humiliation of receiving no response.

It really doesn’t matter who will end the streak as it could be a bottom dweller that does it, but the bottom line is how long can Leverkusen stay at the top of the Bundesliga? Do they have have the depth to deal with the injuries and keep plugging along week in and week out to get the wins? If Rolfes and Helmes can stay healthy that should help the cause, but if Bayern keeps their level of play where it was before the winter break and get Ribery and Robben healthy they will overtake Leverkusen bfore the end of the season IMO.
