Matchday Two; Our house is a very fine house.

There’s a certain pride that comes with moving into a new home. You paint, maybe stain the wood floors, add some wainscoting. Make the place your own. Then, for reasons known only to women and men with personalities too diminutive to hold its own with a dog, someone brings a cat in. Cat’s sorta cute the way it rolls on its back and hits a jingling ball around. But still, that damn cat better not get up on the couch.

Hoffenheim was the cat. The couch was anywhere inside the Leverkusen box.

Today the Werkself returned home to a beautiful new BayArena after making due at LTU Arena for the second half of last season, and showed they weren’t going to be told what to do in their own home. The pressure was on Hoffenheim from the outset, with Leverkusen controlling the midfield and a hard-working Timo Hildebrand the only reason Hoffenheim got off with a 0:0 score heading in to halftime. At the other end of the pitch, a momentarily unmanned Vedad Ibisevic fired off Hoffenheim’s only real shot of the half, only to see his knocked wide by Rene Adler.

Hoffenheim came back in the second half with renewed vigour and, but top-notch defending by our squad kept Rene from having to work too hard, and at the 68th minute, Kießling made up for the chance he’d missed two minutes prior by scoring the match’s only goal off a cross from Renato Augusto that was then back-heeled to just the right striking location by Derdiyok. But don’t take my word for it. See for yourself:

One or two more might have been nice, but it’d be impolite to criticise the boys after the effort they put in today. As the confidence continues to grow, and Jupp’s tutelage continues to manifest itself on the pitch, it’s likely the shots on goal will find the back of the net with more frequency. Besides, better to win by one than draw with three.

By now anyone interested in reading this far already knows we’ve drawn Kaiserslautern for the second Pokal round, so I’ll just shut up now.

If better highlights come along, I’ll post them for you. I know they’re out there someplace.
