Yes, Germany’s keeper is amazing. His name is Rene Adler. He plays for Leverkusen.

The city I’m living in is a mosaic of nationalities, ex-pats and those whose hearts reside in the land of their forebears. On a day like today, when key qualifying matches were being played around the world, it’s easy to find a makeshift “headquarters” where one can join the revelry or despair of supporters of virtually any nation. My mid-day was spent in a Bavarian restaurant, where I watched Germany seal their passage to next summer’s World Cup. By the time I was back home, the noise, noise, noise of honking horns had already started from the over-celebratory Italy supporters, mercifully petering out before it became farcical. Horns for a draw against Ireland? C’mon, guys. Show some restraint.

As early evening rolled around, I was back out to meet a friend at a pub frequented by the city’s South Americans. The main draw was Chile, but other screens were showing the Argentina/Peru tie, Maradona looking very much like Manuel Noriega’s grieving aunt, not an Argentine in the bar, one sagging lump of a man peppering the Chile chants with his own high-pitched Pe-Pe! Ru-Ru! Peru!

“Guess how old I am!” he urged me during half-time.

“Seventy-five,” I said.

“Yes,” he said. “I am.”

The man looked like apple sauce come to life. I thought I was being polite when I guessed 75. I kind of expected he’d come back with “I’ll be 300 next week!”

The colours were mostly Chilean. A handful of Colombian kits. A pair of Uruguayans on mobiles trying to get the updates the screens weren’t providing. And me, still in the DFB’s latest stylings.

adler_faust_345 “Germany!” People said to me. “Your keeper is amazing. What’s his name? Who does he play for?” And I got to feel proud on two fronts, national and club- although I soon modified “He plays for Leverkusen- same as Vidal,” to the more compact “He plays for Leverkusen,” after Arturo sloppily opened the scoring for the wrong team.

It was a lucky match, today, for the Mannschaft. We didn’t dominate by a long shot, but when the shots came at us, Rene Adler was about as good a man as anyone could want to have standing between the attackers and the back of the net.

“Pressure there, pressure here: These are exactly the sort of matches you work hard for and why you put in hours of training each day,” Adler had said before the trip to Moscow. But nary a hint of concern crossed his face through 90 minutes. He looked calm, ready and confident, even when he was left to go one-on-one with Russia’s best- something that might have happened more often if it weren’t for Simon Rolfes, who kept the much-lauded Andrei Arshavin in check for the better part of the match. Pressure came, but it was artfully dispatched and there’s nothing I can tell you about that here that you probably haven’t already read- or seen- for yourself.

In just a year’s time, since he first stepped between the posts for the Mannschaft, Rene has more than proven his capabilities and developed into a solid, reliable ‘keeper. It has become brilliantly clear that he is precisely the sort of ‘keeper Ollie Kahn recently said Germany didn’t have: Weltklasse. So what do you think? Can we give the man more than the sick-leave confidence he’s been afforded until now and hand him his number one on a long-term basis? Show of hands? Excell- oh
. sorry. There in the back- Wiese
. You had something to add? No? Excellent! Looking forward to South Africa.

Great write-up of a day of WC qualifiers. I really enjoyed reading it.

It felt a bit “random” how Rene Adler ended up being the #1 again to be honest, but he certainly proved to be up to the task. Though, I personally also do have that confidence in Enke or Neuer. But we’re coming to a point, where it’s time to finalize the team, so I can live with Adler as #1 for SA.

Heeeh this was funnay. I don’t think Adler getting picked was random at all, he was definitely the logical second choice (but if I were Jogi, I would have made him #1 a long time ago). Thanks for doing the little feature on him today :-) I love love LOVE Adler, and people just don’t give him enough credit for the most part. He’s such a smart player with crazy-quick reflexes.

It sucks that poor Enke had to be near death for Rene to play in these qualifiers. Will Jogi go back to having Enke as his first choice? It’s unfortunate that he was ill, but Rene DID help get them through some important matches, so wouldn’t it be logical to keep him in goal? Oh wait…he thinks Cacau and Gomez are better choices than Kießling…logic doesn’t have a whole lot to do with it.

But that Özil to Klose goal was amazingly delcious, ja? Russia would have scored a bunch of great goals too if it hadn’t been for Rene. They’ve got an incredible team and I’d like to see them kicking ass in South Africa as well.

Do you have any of the post-match interviews, or do you know where to watch them?

The second link shows Rene’s saves as well. He was excellent yesterday!

Thanks for those, Jamie. I’ve shied away from posting youtube links in the posts because they always seem to have been replaced by a copyright notice when I next come check the page. The post-match interview stuff should stay up longer.

Jogi hasn’t committed to Adler as permanent #1, although he crowed about Adler’s performance and commented on how strong a role he played in making him look could (I paraphrase, of course.) I definitely think he has earned the role by now. His route to the #1 jersey wasn’t random, per se, but wasn’t a direct show of faith, either. Had Enke not fallen ill, it’s very likely we’d have seen him wearing that number for the past few matches. If he’d performed well, even without keeping a clean sheet, it’s likely Löw wouldn’t be considering altering the roster. Adler was fortunate through Enke’s misfortune, just as he was when he found himself replacing Butt for Leverkusen on the fateful day 2-and-a-half years back. That luck, though, only gave him the opportunity. His abilities are what have kept him in place with Leverkusen and will, hopefully, do the same with the NT. Now I just wish the dreary notion of his moving to Manchester United didn’t keep springing up.

Quick update for you, Wendy. Löw says that the staff will be looking at the permanent picture in the coming weeks and will most likely offer a long-term answer by November’s end. Ballack was quoted as saying “With a performance such as the one put in (by Adler,) you confirm your place on the team.” Source: http://bit.ly/Az6sg
