Bobel to Bayer
By: Scott | September 13th, 2009Bayer, today, announced that they’ve signed Tomasz Bobel to a one-year contract to replace Benedikt Fernandez as second ‘keeper.
After successful training sessions with the squad and with Fernandez out injured for what looks to be a longer period than originally expected, Bobel was offered the option to sign on.
“This is very exciting for me,” Bobel said. “To play for a club in the Bundesliga is something I wanted to do for a very long time, but did not get the chance to do so. Now I am here and I plan to not ruin this chance.”
The 34-year-old Polish ‘keeper is no stranger to German soil, having spent a decade between the posts in a combined 161 matches for lower-league teams like SC Fortuna Köln and Erzgebirge Aue. Most recently, he was unhappily contracted to Azerbaijan’s Neftchi Baku PfC, but says he knew “it would be best to pack my bags and return to Germany.” Oh, but isn’t it always?
Jupp Heynckes lauded the new signing’s showing during training tests and says he expects Bobel will fit well with the squad.
